“Our song 'Wojenka' was written in winter, when the war in Ukraine had not yet escalated. We reached for this song because the hardships of war always have a deep mark on the borderlands. Besides, it is a song where two melodies from different border regions, with almost identical lyrics, are intertwined. One is perhaps older, treating of the Tsarist wars. The other has probably been transformed in closer times, perhaps the First or Second World War, as it talks about a war in the distant Ukraine. When we met for rehearsals in March, just after Ukraine had been militarily attacked, we found it difficult to get down to this piece, so suddenly painfully. But we decided not to abandon it, because it is a pain that needs to be talked about and helped to soothe. Art, among other things, has that power”. The album by @bastardatrio and @sutari_band , 'Tamoj', will be released on 4th od August by @audio_cave – it is inspired by what happens on the borderland, or many borderlands. I talk with both bands and they tell me fascinating things about not only the music itself, but the complexity of today's cultures and what is happening around them.
