Today The Gaze, the show I curated at the brilliant @tjboulting , finally closes. There isn’t much to say except a huge thank you to everyone who came; to the 20 fantastic artists who contributed; and to Hannah Watson at TJ, who is not only an excellent gallerist but a brilliant friend. Hannah, thank you - i quite literally could have not done it without you. Every pic in the show deserves a post, but perhaps this painting, Doorway by Gilbert Lewis, is a fitting full-stop. Not only is it a beautiful image by a painter who portrayed queer lives for over 50 years (one of the most moving facts is that the model here, Anthony Rullo, felt he was being “immortalised” by Gilbert after his early diagnosis with HIV); it also took a bloody long time to get here from the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia, and only did so thanks to Hannah’s commitment and perseverance. It wasn’t so much of a surprise, really: I always knew she loved The Gaze 💋🍆🙏🏽✨🍑
