TENMOKU.
After the Tianmu Mountains.
Jian tea bowl from the Bai Jiao I, a shipwreck discovered in Dinghai Bay in Lianjiang County, Fujian Province by fishermen in the 1980s and officially excavated in 1995. These Jian bowls (Jianzhou zhan) were exported in large quantities to Japan during the Song Dynasty for Tea ceremonies and were later known as Tenmoku (after the Tianmu mountain where Zen Buddhism was first practised). From the Dongzhang/Minhou kilns in Fujian province. Circa mid to late 13th Century.
I love the glaze that has been named after it!
