(A) Legend of Chang’e/嫦娥 🥮 Happy Mid-Autumn Fesitval/中秋節快樂! For this year, I put together a little history lesson as an art film about the folktale of Chang’e, the ancient Chinese moon goddess whose legend inspired the tradition of moon cakes. There are many different versions, almost all of them with some type of conflict with her lover Hou Yi, then ending up on the moon with a jade rabbit, immortal and brewing for an eternity. Today, I introduce just a few variations of her tale, some bits of what I heard growing up, and strands from other retellings. I filmed most of this before the night before leaving for travel, holding my breath hoping that I would capture the beauty of the story. I was missing just one piece, and I finally caught the perfect shot of the moon in my frame last night as a cloud sky parted very briefly for a very full moon.
