There have been many iconic duos throughout history. Salt-N-Pepa, Mulder and Scully, and, of course, Adobo and Sazón, our newest spice blend duo.
We made these Puerto Rican blends in collaboration with an icon in her own right, Illyanna Maisonet, the award-winning food writer, author of the upcoming cookbook Diasporican and the first Puerto Rican food columnist in the United States.
Our Adobo and Sazón are two super-versatile blends rooted in Puerto Rico (literally, read on to find out more) and are based on Illyanna’s family recipes. They bring the flavors of Puerto Rican food into your home. Use them as marinades, rubs, in soups and stews or to season meat for your new favorite sloppy joe recipe.
Illyanna Maisonet wrote beautifully about creating these blends in her weekly newsletter (seriously, subscribe, it’s awesome) so we’ll let her take it from here:
"Sazón means identity, history, and comfort and creates the foundational flavor of Puerto Rican food. A savory, earthy blend based on garlic, cumin and achiote seeds, this sazón is made with wild achiote sourced directly from San Sebastián, Puerto Rico, and it brings tons of flavor without any MSG or salt. I use it on my pork shoulder roasts, moles and stews.
Just like every family has their own way of making coquito and arroz con gandules, each family has a personal blend of Adobo seasoning spices: turmeric for deep color, oregano for deep flavor and garlic for deep soul! Adobo seasoning has endless possibilities as an addition to dry rubs and wet marinades. Use it for roasted chicken, barbecue and grilled seafood."
