‘$ystem. Failure.’ — reposting this visual i created a few years ago which aimed to encompass the beauty, strength, and resilience that black women hold regardless of their circumstances. it was about showcasing their desire to no longer conform to a white mans world and the rules they’re told to abide by. breaking free + seeking liberation. for background info: it should be noted that this concept wasn’t the initial vision that had been planned in the very beginning for this project. i had been asked to come on board and create an editorial ‘chapter’ in a fashion book that was being put together in Montréal in conjunction with the Phi Centre, and the theme we artists were given to work around was something around the lines of “fashion in the workplace”. however, after having several group meetings regarding said project, i noticed a strong lack of diversity within the group + artists scouted to be apart of this. so I requested my own private meeting with the project manager and explained what i saw and how i felt and what could be done better to include atleast a few of the incredible poc creatives that i knew of in the underground art scene that could use this platform + opportunity. but unfortunately, this opinion of mine was laughed at and brushed off, angering me. I raised my voice a few more times in the private Facebook group, this time about the lack of diversity with the musical talent the event planners were inquiring about to hire for the projects’ launch event, and again was dismissed. that’s when i decided to conceal all ideas of mine from the project managers moving forward + started working on bringing to life a visual that would trigger the ignorance of all non-black people involved — hopefully causing them to pause + reflect... while also empowering and cultivating a sense of power for all oppressed black women everywhere. 🌱
