I’d like to share a small experience Kalani and i shared together as we try to digest he is no longer with us😢 Now i do not know what happened but have heard murmurs he was in the water. Maybe it will help some understand maybe it won’t but i feel it’s worth a share.
Several years ago Kalani had a seizure in the shoreline at log cabins. I was first on scene to pull him out of the water. Completely unconscious as i pulled him up to dry sand. About to start cpr he came to, not fully conscious but breathing and moving. He left in the ambulance that day to see another. A few days later he came by the tower to thank me and hug me and tell me how grateful he was. I’ve known him since he was 10 so i teared up a bit and told him maybe it’s best you stick to skateboarding from now on as you have a legitimate shot at having a long career at it. (Maybe the best surfer/skater ever). He looked me straight in the eye and said “Uncle Mikey I’d rather die then never surf again.” Over the next few years while in the water I’d lightly mention this to him on multiple occasions and it was always the same answer. So much so i stopped asking him as it was becoming a minor annoyance to him.
So to know he went doing what he loved most may bring some comfort to some of us as he knew the risk and it was worth it to him and i don’t blame him. What a talent he was! May he Rest In Peace🙏🏽
Many of us are going to miss you more then you’ll ever know Kalani. Love you boy💔 @kalanidavid
