When the pandemic first hit, New York City—the city that never sleeps—took a long, long nap. Shortly after that happened, @michael_kimmelman wrote an email to some architects, historians, writers and friends, asking them to go for socially distanced walks around the city, to places that spoke to them about what the city meant. Michael Kimmelman is the New York Times’ chief architecture critic, and these walks with friends and colleagues through the sleeping city worked their way into his newspaper column. And now they have made their way into his upcoming new book, “The Intimate City: Walking New York.” Michael Kimmelman has had an extraordinary career in journalism. He was the Time’s longtime chief art critic, he has reported from forty countries, and he has helped shape the conversation around cities, sustainability, and climate change. He’s also an avid piano player. We talk about this and more on my brand new episode of Design Matters. You can listen to the episode at the link in my bio or here https://tinyurl.com/dmmichaelkimmelman and pre-order his remarkable new book here: https://tinyurl.com/intimate-city
