Repost @vonbartha This painting by #FranciscoSierra is now on view @pasquart_ as part of the exhibition ‘(Un)certain Ground’ – Current Painting in Switzerland until Sep 4th, 2022. . Francisco Sierra works in the realms of photorealism and surrealism, but his conceptual approach is primarily concerned with the transformative potential of contemporary figurative painting. His realistic depiction of a wide range of subjects, from household objects and sunsets to fantastical creatures and semi-abstract clay models, combines technical precision with inventiveness. He chooses subjects rarely found in art and explores aesthetic boundaries by focusing on the overlooked and the clichéd. The depiction of banal subjects on large-format canvases not only lends them presence, but also makes it impossible to determine the size of the original. Sierra's unconventional humour stems from his interest in ambiguity, in the fact that things work and can be read in different ways. Three of the pieces on show are part of Sierra's ongoing series of paintings that faithfully depict reliefs in unfired clay made by himself or a member of his family. The moon faces, a favourite theme of the artist, and the absurdly long-legged spider have a naïve, fantastical effect. They play with different pictorial traditions, such as trompe-l'oeil and modernist abstract sculpture, to create a new space for the narrative. .
