Of everything I’ve done, I think my mum was most excited about me interviewing @marsdoug with his friend and collaborator @rosefordestudio for @matchesfashion because she absolutely loved #ItsaSin after we watched @poseonfx together. What transpired at 5CP last month is one of my favourite conversations ever - hearing two intelligent collaborators explain the original thinking, feelings and wide-ranging cultural references behind the admirable fashion looks they put together – with some football chat at the end. The part that resonated with the most is below, about the first look above, being half Jamaican myself:
@marsdoug : ‘I feel connected to my culture and my [Jamaican] heritage in this look. We put a durag on to protect my hair as I was changing clothes and kept it on. We had 1970s and 1980s references in these pictures, and it felt like proper streetwear of that time. A lot of what I’m trying to do with my style is to connect to my past, the generations that have come before me, and to honour that. I feel like that this look does this but there’s a sense of elevation in it. I feel really strong.’
@rosefordestudio : ‘Omari sent me some Chris Steele-Perkins photography references quite a while ago now, but we go back to it a lot. That Jamaican youth club he went and photographed – this definitely has that vibe of something that would be in that scene.’
