You Can’t Smooth A Crumpled Paper Or A Wrinkled Heart [2022]
Score: @reuelwilliams_
Model: @chiemekaaaa
Black don’t crack, no, it don’t.
But our skin belies
Our wrinkled hearts
Broken by slavery
Trampled by Jim Crow
Mocked and tested by...the now.
Each wound, each injustice, each injury, each cut
Becoming a new Middle Passage that
America creates for us
Paved with
Words,
Laws,
Nooses,
Guns.
Four hundred and three years
Is an imprint on our DNA.
We cry secret tears,
Under the cool glow of a soothing moon
And at dawn
We lift wrinkled hearts to the sun for healing,
While we show beautiful shades
Of smooth unbothered shea butter skin
To the world.
