Nashville's iconic Hermitage Hotel played a critical role in women's history and the suffrage movement thanks in part to it's close proximity to the Tennessee statehouse.
To honor that role, on August 18, 2020, the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment (which provided that United States citizens may not be denied the right to vote on account of their sex. However for many women of color, state laws and other loopholes continued to make voting impossible until the enactment of the Voting Rights Act of 1965), the historic hotel was designated a National Historic Landmark.
A recent series of renovations focused on preserving both the hotel's Beaux-Arts design as well as the legacy of the site's place in history.
