My sweet Gran, Leta Lu, passed away last night. I’m lucky enough to have her 1967 copy of Mastering The Art of French Cooking, where she left some shopping lists, recipe cards, and coupons. I feel close to her when I look at her perfect penmanship and her plans for elaborate weekday meals. She was an incredible chef—you can see she was planning to cook three of Ms. Child’s recipes in one week—a marathoner several times over, and, above all else, a sweetheart. I miss her dearly.
