DIMILO Venus (She/They) is an AFAB drag artist from Newcastle and lives with TAR Syndrome (Thrombocytopenia Absent Radius), a rare genetic disorder that is characterized by the absence of the radius bone in the forearm and a dramatically reduced platelet count. This leads to them bearing a striking resemblance to the classical sculpture of the Venus De Milo. With this shoot we opted for bright colours and a hyper realistic approach to show Venus and their disability in a positive light. Using a bright pink we aimed to convey the joy that Venus brings to their drag, as well as touching on the themes of love and femininity traditionally associated with the goddess Aphrodite. Utilising their art to educate people and uplift those living with disabilities, Venus aims to show that a disability isn't always a negative thing and that 'we are just as capable as everyone else.' Without representation, important conversations won't happen, leading to people assuming that those with disabilities should be treated solely with sympathy. I’ve been really excited to share this image, it was really fun executing a full shoot from a sketch.
