Turns out there’s a lot they didn’t teach us in sex ed. Our latest #SollisDiscussion addressed everything we never learned in high school, and Hamptonites attended in droves. “I always thought menopause was optional!” quipped panelist Stacy London, fashion editor and CEO of State of Menopause, to uproar from the full house of attendees. Sitting alongside doula Latham Thomas, fashionista and CEO and co-founder of @glam4good Mary Alice Stephenson, Naturopath Dr Barbara Siminovich-Blok and endocrinologist Dr. Minisha Sood, London also shared her frustration with the fact that menopause is still listed as a pathology by the FDA, which disappointingly only recognizes only two symptoms. Thomas—the founder of Mama Glow—advocated for women learning about their bodies on their own terms: did you know that almost all female reproductive anatomy is named after men? As she explained, the entire landscape of our gendered experience and pleasure is taxonomized by men who have no firsthand experience with it. Of course, that doesn't mean there's a universal female experience, which often diverges on socioeconomic lines. Grasping the hands of her fellow panelists, Stephenson recounted how many of the recipients of her organization @glam4good use socks for menstrual care because they simply can't afford tampons. “And these were girls in New York City—forget other parts of the country or the world,” she said, addressing the 16 million women and girls who lack access to appropriate feminine hygiene in the U.S today. It's a lot to process, but as London put it, even if you get overwhelmed and start to question everything in the world, “Have the midlife crisis... to have the midlife renaissance.”⁣ And Dr Sood and Dr Siminovich showed us how simple steps such as exercise and nutrition can have maximum impact. We are so grateful to our panelists for sharing their wisdom with us, our meticulous moderator who asked all the pressing questions, our gracious hosts who opened their home to us to have this very important conversation and to our sponsor @livecoterie who made this possible. We look forward to seeing you next time.
