Growing up Black and in the South, Thanksgiving was never about the pilgrim myth. I never heard anyone at any of our gatherings ever recount this narrative. This is not a surprise.
Being Black means that you’re often able to see through the holes in the stories that the America tells itself. And was we know the Thanksgiving story is fiction.
For my family Thanksgiving about food traditions and family. We gathered from near and far only seeing some our family members at Thanksgiving. The fact that this holiday was established during the Civil War I’m sure added to its meaning for my ancestors. It was one of the few holidays which was in no way apart of the memory if of enslavement. Thanksgiving always felt lighter as a result.
Today is hard day for many, bringing up so many contradictory emotions. I’m especially thinking about the victims of #ClubQ and the community that lost them, as well as those injured who will spend today in hospital.
Therefore I hope that you will spend this complicated day in whatever way feels right for you.
