On this day 10 years ago it was my first day of retirement from Track Cycling, following my final performance at the London Olympics. I had been racing track bikes since 1989, I had never missed a competitive season until that moment, I remember waking up and feeling not entirely sure who I was anymore. For every athlete I think establishing an identity without their sport is an extremely challenging process. I knew I was surplus to requirement, I retired knowing that minds had been made up and I didn’t have the capacity to fight against it any longer. I wasn’t past my best but I was mentally and emotionally exhausted from trying to prove myself....the training was a breeze in comparison. I retired the physically fastest and strongest I’d ever been and a reigning World and Olympic Champion. The rest is history.
