Did you know your nervous system plays a role in how flexible you are? When your body doesn’t feel safe, it holds back, tightens and tenses up. Limited flexibility is not always just caused by tight muscles, it can be tension held in the mind, or not feeling safe enough to let go. Resistance in the body often starts with resistance in the mind; an example of this is when someone’s under anaesthetic, their muscles can be moved way beyond their usual range because the nervous system has been switched off and the body loses its protective reflexes. Stress, trauma, even emotional pressure can all show up physically. Think about how your shoulders rise when you’re anxious, how you cross your arms over your body when you feel exposed, or how your body literally feels heavier when you’re low or carrying mental load. That’s your nervous system at work. Yoga helps with this. The physical practice is not about the shapes, it’s about learning how to let go. By using your breath you can tell your body that it’s safe and create space from the inside out.
