Meet Beto, our Quality Assurance Chemist. For nearly two decades, he has been one of the key guardians of our brews—making sure each bottle, can, and keg is of its highest quality before it leaves our brewery. So before we dive in, let’s first grab a cold glass of Mosaic IPA, and raise it high to Beto’s dedication to making our beer the best it can be!
What’s your story? 👨🔬
I grew up in Mexico, studied there, and eventually got my bachelor’s in Chemistry. For 15 years I worked for different companies and various industries before finding KARL, and I had no beer knowledge prior. 18 years since then, I’ve learned so much about this wonderful industry!
How important is Quality Control? 🔬🥽
QC helps us keep a high standard that people have come to expect from KARL over the last 34 years. Making sure our beer is on brand and consistent is paramount to us: we’re checking that the yeast is doing everything that we need it to do, making sure alcohol and co2 levels are up to snuff, and so much more. From start to finish, we oversee every aspect of the brewing process. Plus, we’re constantly tasting the beer on a daily basis, trying to detect any off-flavors that may be present. We’re the first line of defense to notify our production team if something is not up to our standards and to work together to correct any mistakes before the beer becomes realized. In other words, our on-site lab is extremely vital to our production process.
Favorite KARL beer? 🍺
Mosaic—I love the citrus and tropical fruit flavors, and it’s not too high in ABV or IBU’s. It’s the perfect IPA for me!
What has kept you here all this time? 🤔
The people here are fantastic, and the flexibility in my work week is amazing. On top of that, making beer is not a quick process, so the fact that my superiors understand that and trust my expertise to execute the important work that I do is very freeing. We foster an atmosphere where quality comes first, and I appreciate that.
What are your goals for the future?
I would be ecstatic to stay here until my retirement, but until then I want to contribute toward the growth of our company and to produce more quality beer!
