I would like to give a special shout-out to Emmy Rossum. Those of you who know me may be aware of how critical I am of my own work and how difficult it is for me to watch it on screen. I always beat myself up over the flaws I see in my application. However, when I watched ANGELYNE, I didn’t see my errors- and it wasn’t because there weren’t any. It was because of Emmy Rossum’s magnificent performance as the mysterious Los Angeles icon. Emmy was so engaging that she even mesmerized ME, transporting me far away from my self-judgemental mind, so much so that I forgot I was watching a TV show. For me to say this speaks to the strength of Emmy’s portrayal of Angelyne. Isn’t this a sign of great story-telling? Coleman Spilde of the Daily Beast agrees: “It’s all led by an astoundingly transformative performance from Emmy Rossum, who commands the attention of everyone in her path the exact same way Angelyne did: with such a fierce commitment to a character, you begin to wonder if she’s playing a character at all.” His description is spot on. One of my favorite scenes is in Episode 3 when Emmy, as Angelyne, takes Hugh Hefner to task. Spilde elaborates : “This scene alone is some of the best work of her career thus far. It’s searing and fiery, an unforgettable display of the power of the feminine.” Kristen Lopez of IndieWire concurs: “Rossum’s characterization nimbly moves between vulnerability, arrogance, and comedy and she truly loses herself in the performance.... Rossum is utterly captivating, finding nuance in a character who’s an icon — even if it’s only in her mind.” I am blown away by Emmy’s tenacity, commitment and absolute dedication to this role. And I am grateful for the experience of having worked with her on this once-in-a-lifetime project. Emmy, I cannot express the amount of respect I have for you.
