Vermicomposting is my favorite way to make compost. It’s easy, low maintenance, nutrient dense and I can yield a lot of compost in a short amount of time. Not to mention, it’s higher in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, improves the soil structure, and retains moisture. There are many different ways to start a worm bin, this way has always worked for me and hopefully for you too! I like to use these smaller 10 or 12 gallon bins because it’s easier to move around and easy for checking on how your bin and worms are doing. Make holes along the top side of your bin. No need for holes at bottom! 🌱Start with adding compost or native soil. 🌱Add browns- like leaves, newspaper, cardboard 🌱Add vermiculite or perlite for grit- skip this step if you used native soil! 🌱Water your soil until it is damp and not drippy! I recommend using filtered water as it won’t bother the healthy microbes in the soil. 🌱Make a hole in the soil and add your greens i.e food scraps- don’t add too much. You want more browns than greens! 🌱Add your worms- in bins this small, I only like to add about 200 worms. Remember they reproduce every 50-90 days. 🌱Cover worms with dirt and voila! Optional: cover the top of your mixture with a wet newspaper. This could help with keeping your worms down into the soil. You may notice in the first 24 hours, your worms climbing to the top of your bin. This is normal. Just transfer them back into the soil. However, if they are doing this consistently, this is a sign that something is wrong-not enough water, food, or air.
