We're saddened that Tom Phillips, painter, writer, collagist and composer, has died. Phillips is famously known for 'A Humument', a Victorian novel which he turned into an extraordinary work of art over 50 years. 📖 Phillips picked up the novel, ‘A Human Document’, in 1966 in a junkshop in South London with the intention to start a new art project. He randomly selected the title when browsing bookshelves with his friend, painter Ron Kitaj. The book would become the basis of Phillips' best-known work, ‘A Humument: A Treated Victorian Novel originally by W.H. Mallock.’ 📖 Vast and detailed, Phillips transformed every single page with rich collage, painting and illustration. All the while he left small lines of text peeking through in serpentine bubble shapes, forming a story about life's memorable moments. 💙
