This is video 1 in an ongoing series I am doing, showcasing compassionate boundary setting. I will be acting out a variety of parenting scenarios and with examples for different ages and stages and personalities. Our kids need our empathy and emotional support and they need our structures, limits, and guidance. I think of it as the soft and sturdy approach to parenting. “I care deeply about what you feel, AND I am going to hold certain limits and expectations because I also care about your growth”. Disclaimer: these scenarios are illustrated in short social media sound bites but will be more extended and complex in real life of course!! I don’t stay this calm and grounded 24/7 in my parenting role and my kids sometimes struggle to receive my care even when I do. But I want to show the heart of the approach so that we can all sense what we are aiming for.
