my last month on the west coast: what a pleasure to be part of this historic gathering at stanford. getting to meet, drink, laugh, smoke, and bully the lacrosse team also staying at our hotel with the iconic @chitraganeshbkny @jenliu3 @votrungkydanh #pattychang @cathyparkhong @johnyaupoet #julieault and so many others i studied for years from afar. i have nothing more intelligent to say than: it was so cool!!! thank you @marcisoonmi @aleesapalexander for your hard-won efforts in assembling us. words from @bummerrrr who led @_vietle, melissa ho, and me in conversation around our ticklish and shifty subject, “gender and sexuality”— “How does one disidentify with what has been imposed and projected onto oneself? How does one render the pathological – so often the queer, the feminine, the emasculated, the Alien other – into its own power? To be clear, I don’t mean the kind of power that empowers and uplifts a subject and transcends difference, but rather, the force of a generative, unruly, creative capacity for innovation, experimentation, and play borne from a multitude of misreadings...There is no stable Asian American subject to be found in these works, no subject that might recover or give proof of corrective inclusion...They also do not assert an inherently radical deviance to be claimed as one’s own. To address how Asian American art might critically engage with the bounds of rigid categories of gender and sexuality is to consider the promiscuity of the visitor and slut for art, like Kwong Chi, the receptivity of the medium ready to take in others, and the inscrutable defamiliarization of abstract objects: a series of misrecognitions that cannot promise a politics wholly good or bad, a figure neither complicit nor resistant...Here, too, is where I return to the phrase IMU UR2, as an utterance marking the moment of proximity and relation that risks the misreading, of being mistaken for another, of imposing oneself too forcefully, of misrecognizing oneself in and for another.” i sign off with some nudies, because what would i ever be without them. xx
