Wearing a headdress indicating her authority, this figure was created by a skilled ceramicist among the Greater Nicoya people in what is now the Linea Vieja area of Costa Rica, around AD 800–1200. Her skin is decorated with body art or tattoos and she sits on a bench resembling a feline figure that highlights her importance. This figure-vessel is in the collection of our @SmithsonianNMAI and is on display in “¡Presente! A Latino History of the United States,” the first exhibition of our @USLatinoMuseum.
