THE BARRENS. I really love this movie, but the production was plagued with a myriad of nightmares. When I first signed on we had a schedule of 31 days. By the time we rolled cameras we had to lose over two weeks of shooting in order to continue. On the first day of production it began to rain... Hard... we decided to wait it out hoping the skies would part and we would be able to continue. It did not happen. It was raining so hard that we were unable to shoot at all. The weather report had rain forecasted all week. On the second day we decided screw it let’s just shoot in the rain. After about five hours into our day the rain stopped and the sun came out. Since we were shooting in continuity nothing for the remainder of the day matched. The next day we brought in rain towers to finish the scene. So here we are trying to create a rain storm while it’s perfectly sunny outside. At the end of the first week we began shooting with the practical Jersey Devil. The original concept was to hire a contortionist and have an animatronic face with no CGI. The day the creature showed up to set, and was put on the actor/contortionist - the suit was so heavy the person inside would just topple over. They couldn’t move. For the remainder of the film anytime we wanted to show the Jersey Devil it had to me moved using a wheelbarrow. I learned more about filmmaking shooting The Barrens then I ever did at film school. Luckily, @stephenmoyer was awesome so that made it bearable.
