One hundred and ten years ago today, Jim Thorpe (Sac and Fox) swept the pentathlon and decathlon at the Olympic Games in Stockholm, the first Native American athlete to win an Olympic gold medal for the U.S. Because he'd previously been paid to play baseball, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) later stripped him of his amateur status and medals. After a long campaign, his titles were reinstated as a co-champion in 1982. Today the IOC restored Thorpe's title as the sole gold winner.
