Protesters are gathering in Iran in protest of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini’s death at the hands of “morality police.”
While visiting family in Tehran last week, Mahsa Amini was arrested for allegedly breaking the country’s hijab laws in her brother’s car by “morality police,” a dedicated unit that enforces dress codes for women, such as wearing the compulsory hijab. Amini's family and eyewitnesses say officers beat her in the police van after her arrest, but police have rejected the allegations, claiming that Amini died of a heart attack in the hospital.
Since then, a top medical official in the southern province of Hormozgan rejected some Iranian officials' claims, and confirmed the most likely cause of her death was a blow to the head at the hands of police who beat her.
The wrongful death and systemic violence has since sparked a public outpour of anger over the freedoms, rights, and gender-based violence against Iranian women. At least seven people are reported to have been killed and 450 people are reported to have been injured since the protests began throughout Iran, according to Hengaw.
