I KISSED A GIRL AND I LIKED IT - JUST DON’T PUT A LABEL ON ME. Is the headline in today’s @telegraph column. Apologies if anyone dropped their toast butter side down this morning. AND NO... I’m not going to look at the comments.... I’ve never particularly liked defining my sexuality as “straight”. Over the years, I’ve been attracted to all kinds of people. I’ve fallen in love with gay men, I’ve had flings with “straight” women, I’ve kissed gay women, I’ve dated men who are straight-but-sometimes-like men, men. But mostly, I’ve dated “straight” men who have zero desire to date other men. Was this down to my desire to procreate, to have kids, be a ‘family’ of four, mum, dad, two kids.... Later in life lesbianism is just a headline. Sure, I can name a dozen women I know who they themselves identify as straight, and yet at some have fell in love with a woman. Is it a coincidence the women I can name check happen to be in midlife? Perhaps someone can enlighten me on this phenomenon? Is it hormonal? No longer fertile but still fuckable, are these women following their true path, or, have they simply fallen in love with someone of the same sex? For me, nothing feels clear cut. Sure, I kissed a woman in a bar in front of lots of people. But I’ve done it before. But it wasn’t until I had the following text exchange with my friend @theawakenist I began viewing my own sexual identity as something I myself have clearly put a label on. A label I no longer wish to be defined by just because I’m Gen X. But, if I had to, I prefer queer. Here’s the text...(as featured in today’s paper) “Any clue where I can take my friends dancing this weekend?” was the innocent-enough text sent by a younger friend inspiring this week’s confessional column. “Straight or gay?” I typed back. “Non-binary,” he replied. I stared at my phone for a moment. Non-binary, eh? Neither black nor white but something hovering in between, now there’s a liberating thought”. Thoughts? Gen-Xers? Millennials, Gen-Z?
