#FactsOverFear GLAAD’s Director, Communities of Color and Media, @dashawnusher recently did an interview with Avera Martin regarding #monkeypox (MPV) and wanted to share the important message as to why we still must educate our communities on understanding the virus and what it means for vaccines. So here are the facts: - Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with MPV (monkeypox virus) that was first discovered in 1958. - The virus spreads by skin-to-skin contact with an individual who has active MVP, or when someone comes into contact with contaminated clothes or linen. - While currently there may be a portion of cases noted within a particular community (right now), communicable diseases can show up in ALL communities (we’ve seen this occur over time). ALL communities need ACCURATE information. Anyone can get MPV if they are exposed to it. - Visit the CDC website to learn about MPV - Check your local Health Department’s MPV testing protocols and vaccine eligibility availability in your area. Visit glaad.org/MPVfacts to learn more.
