A very common practice in aviation industry is - Overbooking. π
An overbooked flight is when an airline sells more tickets on the plane than there are seats. This is a way to avoid empty seats from no-show passengers or missed connections. π
If you havenβt fallen victim to overbooking yet, chances are someone in your friend circle has. π
So what are your rights as a passenger, when something like this happens? π£
Well, according to Ministry of civil aviation - if airline fails to arrange for an alternate flight scheduled to depart within one hour of the original scheduled departure time:
- You get compensation worth 200%of booked one way basic fare+ airline fuel charge (upto INR 10,000) if the departure is within 24 hours. π±
- If the alternative flight is after 24 hours, you get 400% of basic fare+airline fuel charge upto INR 20,000. π±
- Also, in case you refuse to opt for the alternative flight you get 400% of basic fare+airline fuel charge upto INR 20,000. π±
