Autumn West End Gallery HOP! Spotlight on Mayfair ‘White is emptiness, immateriality, calm and silence.' From the extreme colour of Vasarely at Mazzoleni, we turn to the minimal monochrome of Raimund Girke at The Mayor Gallery. As Girke himself said: “Abandoning colourful polychrome for monochrome increases the scope for working with colour: the result of fewer colours is higher quality. Instead of many colours vying for precedence, one colour takes command, comes into its own, is free to attain its full intensity..” An influential figure of post-war German art, #RaimundGirke (b. 1930 Lower Silesia - d. 2002 Cologne, Germany) studied at the art school in Hanover before moving on to the Düsseldorf Art Academy with ZERO founders #OttoPiene and #HeinzMack. Departing from Abstract Expressionism and initially influenced by the gestural-rhythmic abstraction of Art Informel, he became a forerunner of Analytical Painting. The Mayor Gallery Raimund Girke 11 October - 25 November, Mon–Fri 10am–5.30pm Open until 8pm on Thursday 13 October for the West End Gallery HOP!
