Want to travel more? Stop buying things you don't need. Want to be travel more sustainably? STOP BUYING THINGS YOU DON'T NEED. Recent influencer marketing got me like ... 😡 It is trendy and popular to promote environmentalism now. Which means companies wanting to sell their merchandise pay influencers to promote it, which they do, because they wanna get paid. It is thinly veiled consumerism under the guise of environmentalism and sustainability. And my news feed is flooded with it. So instead of literally buying into the clever marketing scheme, STOP BUYING. Borrow, rent or use the clothes already in your closet that ARE good enough. Shop secondhand. Yeah, maybe your insta shots won't be as #fashun like all the instagrammers, but it's a more sustainable decision than buying the product they're promoting. And remember... next week they'll be promoting another product. Think critically about the information you consume on this platform. Instagrammers aka INFLUENCERS exist because YOU become INFLUENCED by them. The industry, at its core, is marketing. And yeah, of course some instagrammers care about the environment. I'm not questioning that. But you, as the consumer, are responsible for figuring out whether an advertisment is actually promoting sustainability and environmentalism. Or if it is just another case of a company and an instagrammer jumping on the environmentalism bandwagon. Because buying products you don't need, even those products promoted as sustainable, is directly at odds with environmentalism. But spreading awareness about the environment is what is currently selling. These posts get high engagement. So companies looking to sell their products contact the influencers posting about this issue. And suddenly your newsfeed is full of posts apparently about sustainability... but which are selling you something. So next time you see a post like this, question what is being marketed to you. Are you being encouraged to buy another product you don't need? What else does this influencer market? Don't NEED it? Don't buy it. Which is a much more environmentally friendly decision. #ladiesgoneglobal
