Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. We recognize this day and bring attention to the rate Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit relatives are victims to human and sex trafficking. Unfortunately, there is limited data due to the significant underreporting around missing and murdered Indigenous peoples - especially in urban areas where more 70% of Indigenous peoples live. According to the National Crime Information Center, in 2016 there were 5,712 reports of MMIWG2S, but only 116 of them were logged in the Department of Justice’s database. We will continue to bring awareness to this crisis today and year-round and demand meaningful systemic and legislative change at the local, state, and federal levels.
