In case you missed our other collaborative post, here’s another one ;) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s been 8 years since I drove my older sister to get an MRI to figure out why she was having searing headaches for days on end. Later that day, she got the phone call that would change her life and our family’s life forever. I don’t talk about it publicly much because it’s not my story to tell and to be honest it was a very traumatic time. However, I can talk about my story as a loved one of a cancer patient, as a support system—maybe it wouldn’t have been so traumatic if more support systems did talk about their experiences. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ No one expects to get diagnosed with brain cancer at 24 years old, and no one expects to have a loved one get diagnosed with brain cancer at 24 years old. Which is probably why none of us were remotely prepared for what was to come. I wish there were better resources for cancer patients and their support systems, so if/when that call does come they have the tools to navigate the experience with as little distress as possible. With that in mind, here is a list of things we learned since that day, it will be an ongoing list that we will add to over time (suggestions from other cancer survivors and support systems welcome!) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cancerversary #cancersupportsystem #fuckcancer
