A couple of years ago, my 4 year old nephew and I played with all the clothes I had brought to my parents’ house (I was out on a tour so the bag was packed), and I could really see how he loved all the glitter and gold. He put on one of my golden bodysuits – he looked adorable and most of all I could see how much he loved it. He was excited and felt so exotic. We ran down the stairs to the others, he wanted to show everybody. My family didn’t mean any harm but to see this little adorable child popping up from out of the blue in my stage clothes made them burst out in laughter and my nephews face went from open, happy and excited to ashamed and sad. He ran up the stairs before anyone had time to say anything, he threw off the clothes as fast as he could. I ran after him and tried to explain,
– No one meant any harm, you look amazing honey!! If you like it don’t take it off, but he had shut down.
Seeing his sad little face broke my heart in two and made me so angry. How early on we get so aware. In some way or another, he understood he put himself out there and all he could hear was the laughter that made him feel ashamed and leaving him with a feeling of “what I believe is beautiful is in others eyes the opposite”
It’s just a reminder of how important it is to let each other explore. Children or grown-ups doesn’t matter. Give each other space. Some of us are strong from birth walking our own paths ignoring what others think – but many of us are more fragile. Don’t close that flower inside of you of exploring, creating, dreaming. The bigger, the weirder, the better.
Never let that child inside of you run up the stairs hiding.
Everything is so much easier if we’re surrounded by people who believe in us and encourage us to explore. If you have just one of these people around you – embrace that. We all need love and appreciation to flourish.
Thank you glam team for making this child’s dreams and ideas come to life:
