#SmarterInSeconds: #CancelCulture 🚫 featuring @kahlil.greene and @mx.deran šŸ’Æ Cancel culture isn’t new. Humans have been canceling each other since the beginning of time. There was even an ancient practice called ā€˜damnatio memoriae’ where our canceled ancestors would be stricken from the historical record. Forget Twitter beef, they would literally etch the face off a statue or coin and ban any mention of the canceled person. It’s just a testament to our mortal hubris to think canceling was invented in the 2010s. If there’s anything to take away from this lesson it’s that the actual victims of canceling in the modern day are not the privileged celebrities and corporate entities that are often called to account for bad behavior and messed up policies—it’s the marginalized people who are harmed by their hateful rhetoric and reckless actions. It’s difficult to know who to side with when someone or something is ā€œcanceledā€ but a good indicator is to determine the facts and whether the target of cancellation is reinforcing or dismantling a system of oppression—of course, you can also decide whether you want to be involved at all.
