📖 The writer Virginia Woolf was a regular visitor here at Charleston. She’d often swing by to see her sister, the artist Vanessa Bell and wrote many a diary entry about the chaotic scenes she found here! A bust of Virginia now sits in our studio, keeping a watchful eye over the house... 🎨 Making this bust was no mean feat! In 1931, the artist Stephen Tomlin persuaded his friend Virginia to let him sculpt her portrait. Not only was Virginia incredibly busy, working on her experimental writing and queer, feminist works, she also hated being looked at! Frustrated, it wasn’t long until Virginia called it a day. Despite the struggle, this original, if unfinished, plaster bust captures the writer’s likeness... 🌈 Did you know that you can now see a bronze cast of this bust at Queer Britain in London? 🏳️‍🌈 Celebrating queer culture past and present, Queer Britain is the UK’s first national LGBTQ+ museum. Their latest exhibition, ‘We Are Queer Britain’ opens next week and also includes an erotic drawing by Duncan Grant from our collection. 📸 The studio at Charleston, photo: Ëpha J.
