Went home to hold the open house for our second class of scholars at the @1619freedomschool. We are expanding this year to serve 4th and 5th grade and adding additional schools. The 1619 Freedom School is a free, afterschool Black history literacy program that serves students who are at least two years behind in reading. Our inaugural class launched in January. At the start of the semester, none of our scholars were reading on grade level. At the end of the semester, 44 percent were. When we provide a nurturing environment, a relevant and affirming curriculum, one-on-one support from certified master teachers, and a BELIEF that all of our children can achieve, our babies rise to our expectations every time.
