Today is National Coming Out Day, a day honoring the LGBTQ+ community, the act of coming out and all the related hopes, fears, dreams and expectations for the future.
This amazing content was created by @spelman_college students. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
Kiersten White, C’2018, produced and directed “A Differently-Curated World,” a two-minute short film paying reverence to Black, queer legacies.
“In this age of Black nostalgia, as we see the remake of classic Black sitcoms and the reimagining of Black excellence using the tools, fashion, entertainment, and mediums of yesteryear— we find that one particular community of Blacks is missing from the mainstream conversation, the LGBTQ+ community,” said White.
A filmmaker based in New York City, White earned an MFA from Savannah College of Art and Design in film and television and a BFA from Spelman College in comparative women’s studies.
White is dedicated to intentionally bridging gaps through creative-based community involvement and is passionate about dismantling supremacist structures through visual media that equitably represent and portray marginalized communities.
When asked about their hopes for the film, White stated, “It is truly a passion project with the intent of highlighting the images and subjects who have helped shape our Black queer experience and honor those who we look to for guidance in their literature, work, and art. We hope to shed light on our queer predecessors who lived and loved openly in a time of less understanding.”
White is featured in the film along with Jada Nycole Ellise, C’2018, who sings a reimagined version of the iconic theme song. Diop Russell, C’2022, is also a producer on the project and Morehouse class of 2021 graduate Sammi Jacobs is a featured actor in the short.
