Yesterday the president gave a speech where he once again defended the racist police institution and carceral system. Biden should know that more police doesn't mean people are more safe. Instead, we need to divest from policing and invest in public health and safety alternatives. Biden has spent months denouncing our movement's calls to reimagine policing and public safety instead of grasping the reality that police antagonize Black and brown people regularly. We will never support Biden's Safer America Plan. An increase in funding for the police will only reinforce the false notion that "reform" will improve the police system when it's working exactly as it was intended: to protect the property of the wealthy instead of valuing the humanity of people. Biden should champion the People's Response Act, violence intervention, non-carceral crisis response, affordable housing, and other measures that would actually keep our communities safe.
