One of the most challenging movements to assemble and regulate is our caliber 1506, found in our lineSport Centigraphe models.
.
It was first thought that the only way to measure speeds of 1/100th of a second was to use an incredibly fast escapement, beating at 360,000 vibrations per hour (or 50 HZ).
.
For François-Paul Journe, such an escapement would require a small balance wheel and that often leads to very poor performance, as they are harder to regulate.
.
Thus, he thought to develop the movement of the Centigraphe with his traditional 10.4 mm balance wheel that would beat at 3 Hz. This results in a movement that splits the time to 1/6th of a second. The Centigraphe however was developed with the capability of further stopping time in between those 1/6th intervals, allowing it to measure speeds of up to 1/100th of a second.
.
Constructing this timepiece differs from other chronographs as it is a dynamic construction as opposed to a more static one. The intricate components need to be synced across three different speeds (seen on the dial) and carefully tested to endure those fast speeds.
