It is not easy to stay calm when our children are full of feelings or acting out in some way. And it’s even harder to stay calm as a parent if we never experienced the power of calm connection from a parent in our own childhood.
While we can’t turn back time, we can choose to offer ourselves the type of understanding we needed in childhood and use that compassionate stance towards ourselves to help us feel calmer and therefore react more maturely and compassionately to our children.
The next time you are feeling triggered or overwhelmed or stuck, start with saying something kind to yourself and watch how much easier it is to find that same level of understanding for your kids.
