“We spend our whole lives building up resilience to feelings and how to deal with and circumvent the emotional response we get to our surroundings, this is great as it allows us to function. When you push your body as far as we do riding long distances to me it is like all the defences burst and I get connected to the emotional true me. After 20-30h in the saddle I *feel* everything, I can see a bird flying alone over a field in the morning and I can start crying because of the beauty, I can start laughing about a memory from childhood or feel utter sadness about something else. I just get connected to the true, honest me.”
Portrait and quote: Carl Henrik
Photographed at 5am, inside the Poole control for Moonrakers and Sunseekers. The classic overnight 300km Audax starts and finishes in Bristol every November and is organised by @gwraudax. Part of my ongoing series: “The Randonneurs”
An unforgettable experience working alongside an awesome bunch of volunteers on Moonrakers, tirelessly serving over 180 baked potatoes to tired riders through the night! @jon_b62 @fionariddles @lukehounsome @dulce_in_1000_words + Brian & Ian!
Thanks to everyone who gave up their time to have a portrait taken. I’ll be emailing the remaining film scans to everyone whilst catching up over Christmas.
Also a huge thanks to Carl for answering his questions with such depth and honesty.
