A few scattered, yet interrelated, items: There are a whole bunch of new people on my studio page since #IllustratedBlackHistory was published two months ago. I feel like I should explain who I am and why you’re going to see a lot of different visual things that might not make any sense, but actually does. The short version: my name is George McCalman. I run a design studio named #McCalmanCo, which I’ve had for almost 12 years. I do a lot of creative things at the same time. My studio brands companies, people, places, and things. I have varied clients and collaborators all over the country (and world). I spend a lot of my days creating, wrangling and detangling visual communication in its myriad forms. But I am also an artist, fine and commercial. I make a lot of things with my hands. I’m also a writer, professor, editor, brand strategist, typographer, columnist, philosopher and designer. Basically, I’m a busybody. That explanation probably made it even more confusing, haha. These images are impromptu outtakes taken by photographer Steve @Babuljak in early October at my art studio. What you can’t see in front of me is a film crew. There is a short film documentary being produced on the making of ‘Illustrated Black History’ which will premiere next February at a Bay Area cultural institution that I’m not at liberty to share yet.
