THE END OF AN ERA. Four years ago, I broke ground on my dream project: a backyard miniramp. After getting soft approval from my landlord, neighbors, and roommate, I decided to give it a go. There was so much risk and anxiety leading up to the initial build – it was time consuming, a potential strain on neighbor relations, expensive, and might be shut down by the city within the first week.
Yet from the moment we broke ground, I knew I made the right decision when it emerged as a community hub. Endless friends came together to help build, paint, skate, perform, party, and now demolish this monstrosity. It’s been a beautiful last four years. I’ve met so many incredible artists and skateboarders, bonded with neighbors, hosted amazing parties, collaborated on film shoots, and learned how to skate transition.
Leaving the ramp behind was tough in many ways. Physically, the demolition was an undertaking and I owe the world to all my friends who came through to make this happen. Emotionally, this ramp has come to symbolize my youth, so breaking it down and moving out felt symbolic of a major lifestyle shift.
Thank you to everyone who’s made the ramp’s last four years spectacular. I’m grateful to be passing on the salvaged wood and metal to @tenantny to be reincarnated. The rest will be rotting in a landfill alongside my cherished youth. Onto whatever’s next.
