#SmarterInSeconds: Yoga and cultural appropriation featuring @SusannaBarkataki 🪷 co-written by @catuccino
Contrary to whitewashed, commercialized, and colonized understandings of yoga, wearing “yoga pants” and having a “yoga mat” doesn’t automatically make you a yoga practitioner. It takes intention, time, and commitment. This lesson may seem like a “call out” but it’s really a “call up.” An invitation to go beyond the surface.
Thanks to @andrew7sealy I’ve been working on my own practice of yoga since February and thanks to @susannabarkataki and her excellent book 📕 Embrace Yoga’s Roots: Courageous Ways to Deepen Your Yoga Practice, I’ve been deepening my understanding not only of the physical practice of Asana but the entire expanse of yoga.
Yoga is a spiritual practice that originated in South Asia thousands of years ago. The Sanskrit word yoga describes a connection in consciousness and experience as well as the techniques, philosophies, practices, and lifestyles that bring a person to that connection.
EXTRA CREDIT: Comment below with something you’ve learned about yoga or something that you often see misinterpreted or misunderstood about yoga or any other spiritual-cultural practice.
