“We were only going to do My Dying Spirit if we could shoot it on film the way we wanted. There really wasn’t a bunch of give and take. We decided if we were going to tackle this project, we would be unapologetically tackling it our way. Damien and I discussed & debated over two formats. 4 perf 35mm finishing in academy aspect ratio. and super 16 anamorphic. There were story elements that worked for both, but we felt like the wider aspect ratio and the grain structure & grit of super 16 anamorphic was more right for how we would shoot for this story. The treatment Damien wrote for this was darker and sad, so I knew we were going to end up with a thinner negative going as dark as we did. How super 16 anamorphic reacts to these ideas made it the right format for this project. We also shot a little standard 16 anamorphic hand cranked on the Bolex, because we’re always pushing to do something we haven’t tried yet.
