Largest land carnivore on planet earth. I am humbled to have sat in the presence of this magnificent polar bear, feeding on a whale at the edge of the Greenland Sea. I had dreamed of a portrait like this for a very long time and after 100+ days in the Arctic, I just figured it would never line up for me. I got lucky. Being on such a steep bank, his haunches were naturally high behind him and front paws really low in the water. I thought that if I could keep the bear perfectly centered in frame and symmetrical to its body, I would just need “the look”. After about 30 minutes of waiting, I honestly thought that the bear would never notice us or even care to spend a fraction of its energy looking our way. When he finally lifted his head I was was in such awe that I barely remember hitting the shutter. My eye literally frozen to the viewfinder. Moments like this last forever. A power image, indeed. Shot on @sonyalpha #a1 #600f4 for @sealegacy as we work to help ban the international trade of this highly vulnerable species. @paulnicklen @mitty
