The new Auckland Experience Centre reflects our ‘Designed in Aotearoa New Zealand’ identity. Created in partnership with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, its sculptural elements and natural materiality represent significant ancestral narratives. The threshold of the experience centre celebrates the ritual of water. Within the carved bowl of a 6-ton basalt sculpture – a contemporary sculptural expression of Tumutumuwhenua, recognised as one of the primal parents of the Ngāti Whātua peoples – fresh water rises and falls in sync with the tides of the Waitematā. This ‘breathing rock’ calls back to Ōkahu Bay, the site of Ōrākei Marae, and represents the wairua and spirit of Tumutumuwhenua.
